Start with Where the Skip Will Go

Look at the property before deciding which skip to hire. Will it stand on your drive, in a private yard or on the road? A driveway can keep the skip close to the house, but only if it has firm ground and the lorry can reach it. Measure the entrance as well as the space inside. Tell us about gates, a tight turn, trees or wires above the route. Leave a way to open the front door and use any shared drive.

Older streets need a little more thought. A small front garden in Moseley, a passage in Worcester’s St John’s and a yard behind a West Bromwich shop offer different routes for carrying waste outside. A footpath may let you reach the back garden without letting a lorry in. Explain the entrance you can actually use. If the yard opens onto another road, give that road as well as your postal address.

Use the Council Responsible for Your Road

The nearest big city does not always provide the road permit. Birmingham handles Sutton Coldfield as well as Birmingham itself. Sandwell deals with West Bromwich, while Warwickshire County Council handles Nuneaton. Worcester’s road-skip applications go through Worcestershire County Council. Give the full delivery postcode when you call so the right rules can be used. There is no reason to copy the permit plan from a friend’s job in another town.

A permit is the council’s permission to put a skip on a public road. It is separate from your booking with the skip company. Birmingham’s permits last no more than seven days each, while Sandwell’s can last up to ten. If the building work takes longer, the road permission may need renewing as well as the hire. Agree what is included in the quote and ask before keeping the skip beyond the booked dates.

Check Parking Bays and Busy Centre Streets

A skip permit does not automatically keep a parking bay empty for you. The council may need to suspend the bay, which means taking it out of normal parking use for agreed dates. A vehicle dispensation is different: it lets a particular work vehicle use a restricted space. Tell the council whether the space is for a skip that stays or a lorry that stops to deliver it. Do not put out your own cones and assume the bay is reserved.

Centre jobs can also need a different kind of skip. Stoke-on-Trent’s published conditions require lidded, lockable skips in its listed town centres, with seven-day highway permission. Some busy roads also have set times for drop-off and pickup. In Solihull, the skip application needs at least two clear working days’ notice. Wolverhampton asks for at least seven working days for a temporary bay closure. These are council application requirements, not promises of a delivery date or approval.

Describe the Waste Before Choosing the Size

A pile of old kitchen cupboards and a pile of broken paving need different space and weight limits. Wood, packaging and branches can fill a skip quickly without being the heaviest part of the job. Soil, bricks and concrete can reach the weight limit while space remains. List the main materials and tell us about large pieces. A taller skip does not mean it can take any amount of rubble.

Use the size pictures to get an idea of the room inside. Then confirm the actual model, measurements and waste with the booking. If you need a loading door, say so rather than relying on a photo. Road rules can also limit your choice: Sandwell’s published guidance sets a three-metre by two-metre maximum for a highway skip. A large size shown in the catalogue is therefore not a promise that it can go on the road outside your home.

Mention mattresses, padded furniture, plasterboard and electrical items before booking. They may have different collection rules or charges. Keep anything that might contain asbestos out of an ordinary skip and ask for the right collection route instead.

Leave Access for Loading and Collection

You fill a hired skip yourself. Keep a clear walking route from the house or garden and put waste below the fill line. Do not stack boards above the sides to make it taller. Agree when collection will happen or when to call for it. If a full skip must leave before the whole project is finished, include that in the plan rather than leaving it until the builders pack up.

Keep the lorry’s approach open until pickup. New materials, work vans and fencing can block a route that was clear when the skip arrived. If you need people to lift rubbish into a van and take it away instead, ask for the separate rubbish-removal service. That is a different job from hiring a skip to fill over several days. Call Jack Cole Skips with the postcode, waste and access details so the quote covers the service you actually need.
